Groundwater Investigation & Remediation - A Case Study

Project Highlights:

•  Innovative approach to achieve remediation without disrupting site operations.

•  Horizontal drilling utilized to install air sparge and vapor extraction system.

•  NJDEP approval of remedial design following first design submittal.

Facility:

Research and development (R&D) facility in Central New Jersey.

Regulatory Involvement/Program:

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Bureau of Underground Storage Tanks

Constituents of Interest:

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, and naphthalene.

The Problem:

Several thousand gallons of research grade gasoline migrated below the active R & D facility. Remedial investigation (by Hudson) indicated at least 80% of the phase-separated plume existed below the facility. Strict quality control of indoor air quality and no disruption of operations were critical factors that dictated an alternative approach to remedial investigation and remedial design.

The Solution:

Hudson was retained to complete the remedial investigation, perform a remedial alternatives analysis and propose a remedy. A horizontal air sparge and soil vapor extraction, (AS/SVE) system with vapor treatment via catalytic oxidation was designed and installed by Hudson.

Remedial Alternatives Analysis:

Two approaches were available to operate the AS/SVE system; installation of multiple vertical wells or installation of only 3 horizontal wells.

Feasibility analysis indicated the horizontal system would be less costly, less disruptive and more efficient.

Engineering Design:

Pilot testing and subsurface characterization provided data to design two horizontal air sparge wells and one horizontal vapor extraction well. The system was designed to sparge and extract 250 cubic feet per minute. Sparged air is captured by the extraction well and routed to a catalytic oxidizer for treatment.

Remedial Action:

The system was installed as designed, on time and within budget. The system is currently extracting several hundred pounds of contamination per week.
